Volleyball Brings Out Brooms in Road Finale Against Bluefield
BLUEFIELD, Va.- The volleyball team played on the road for the final time during the regular season on Saturday. The team returned home with a 3-0 win against the Bluefield University Lady Rams.
TWU started the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest on a 7-1 run and moved ahead 10-5 on an Ella Brannan kill. A service ace by Gracelyn Jackson moved the lead to 13-6. After a five-point spree by Bluefield, the Lady Bulldogs started pulling the score away again, using a service ace by Alley Hibdon and a kill by Savannah Jones to help the team lead 21-17. A service error by the opponents helped the team take the first set 25-19.
Holding a two-point advantage, Tennessee Wesleyan scored five consecutive points to move ahead 14-7 on a Jones kill. The set got close, though, as a kill by Nyah Hudson made the score 20-18 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs. Block assists by Kianna Wickham and Hudson kept the momentum with the team as a Hibdon kill gave the team a 25-20 win in the second set.
TWU swept the match with a 25-19 win in the third set. With the match tied 4-4, the Lady Bulldogs scored six of the next seven points to lead 10-5. Bluefield brought the score within three points before Tennessee Wesleyan went on a cruise of points, leading 17-11 after a Hudson block solo. Hunter Ford's kill ended with the match.
Jones led the offense with 10 kills to go along with eight kills by Brannan and seven kills each from Hibdon and Ford. Hibdon aided the offense with 20 assists while tying Gracelyn Jackson to lead the team with 12 digs each.
TWU (19-11, 11-7 AAC) closes out the regular season on Tuesday with a home match against Milligan University at 6:30 p.m.
