Volleyball Tames Lions
ATHENS, Tenn.- The volleyball team defended its home court with authority Tuesday night, sweeping the Bryan College Lady Lions 3-0. Tennessee Wesleyan secured the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) sweep with scores of 25-19, 27-25, and 25-18.
Bryan opened with an early burst, but Tennessee Wesleyan steadied itself and took control midway through the frame. After weathering an early run by the visitors, TWU responded with a string of clean offense orchestrated by setter Alley Hibdon. Ella Brannan and Amya Sutton supplied hard-driven kills to counter Bryan's net attack, and Savannah Jones contributed at the block to snuff several Bryan rallies. Tennessee Wesleyan closed the set on sustained pressure at the service line and crisp transition offense to take the opener, 25-19.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle that saw both teams trade momentum and runs. Bryan pushed TWU to the limit with aggressive serving and forced errors, opening a late window that threatened to flip the match. Tennessee Wesleyan answered with gutsy play: Janie Merritt and Sutton produced several clutch kills, while Bailey Dalton turned in a pair of late service plays that swung momentum back to the Bulldogs in the extended points. Hibdon continued to mix the attack, finding outside and middle options when it mattered most. TWU battled through the pressure and outlasted Bryan in extra points, 27-25.
After the tight second frame, Tennessee Wesleyan came out in the third with the energy of a team determined to finish. TWU jumped ahead early on quick sets and efficient hitting — Brannan, Hibdon and Hunter Ford all punctured rallies at the net — and the Bulldogs sustained the lead with steady defense and well-timed serving. Megan Thompson was a steadying force in the back row, making several digs that extended possessions and led to decisive transition points. Tennessee Wesleyan pulled away in the middle portion of the set and closed comfortably, 25-18, to complete the sweep.
TWU (10-5, 2-1 AAC) goes on the road for an AAC match against Milligan University on Saturday. The match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
