Overtime Winner Gives Schoemehl First Win as Women's Lacrosse Coach

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's lacrosse team won the first game of the Lorna Schoemehl era on Sunday. The team was the first to score in overtime to win the game against Warner University 10-9.

Warner scored the first two goals of the game to put the Lady Bulldogs down. The team scored two goals to put the game in a 2-2 tie at the end of the first quarter. Kylie Heinrich scored the first goal for the team while Kate Buchanan tied the game with her goal.

In the second quarter, each team only scored once. Olivia Downey scored for Tennessee Wesleyan as the game went into the halftime break tied 3-3.

Out of the intermission, Jozlyn Long broke the tie on a free position shot. Buchanan made the lead two goals for the Lady Bulldogs a little over a minute later. Warner took back the lead though, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 6-5 advantage. Downey scored her second goal of the game off Heinrich's assist with 1:17 left in the third to send the game to the final quarter in a 6-6 tie.

TWU took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Downey scored for a third time in the game off Heinrich's second assist 19 seconds into the fourth quarter. Heinrich's third assist of the game went to Long to push the Lady Bulldogs up by two goals. Similar to the third quarter, Warner scored three straight goals to pull ahead 9-8. Unlike the third quarter, this time Heinrich scored on a Downey assist, evening the score at 9-9. Neither team scored before the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

In the first to score overtime period, Buchanan scored with 34 seconds remaining in the first overtime period on a free position shot to give the team the overtime win.

Buchanan and Downey both had three goals in the game while Long and Heinrich scored twice. Heinrich also had two assists. Rylee Brendlinger had a career-high 22 saves in the goal.

TWU (1-1) will be back in action on Wednesday when they host NCAA Division II Shorter University. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.
