Women's Basketball Falls on Road to Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga.- The women's basketball team traveled to face the Brenau University Golden Tigers in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game on Saturday. The team was unable to complete a comeback against the conference foe, falling 70-64.

After Sloan Carpenter gave the team a 2-0 lead, Brenau scored the next eight points to lead 8-2. The team battled back, taking a 13-11 lead on Leslie Hames' layup with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter. Brenau took back the lead though, scoring 12 of the last 16 points to lead 23-16 at the quarter break.

Courtney Berry opened the second quarter with a three-point jumper to cut the lead to four. The team was unable to pull closer until the 2:24 mark of the quarter, pulling within one point of the lead off back-to-back Aubrey Long baskets. Berry cut the lead down to one point again after a Brenau response, and the team went into halftime trailing 37-34.

Carpenter and Camryn Brown kept the team within three points of the lead after Brenau opened the third quarter with two scores, moving the score to 41-38. A 10-1 run by the opponents dug the hole the Lady Bulldogs were in deeper and gave the opponents a double-digit advantage as the score moved to 51-39. Five straight points by Carpenter ended the drought and the team headed into the fourth quarter trailing 53-44.

Jordan White, Carpenter, and Long combined to score 11 points for TWU in an 11-6 run to help the team pull within four points of the lead midway through the fourth quarter. Brown helped the team pull within three points on two different occasions, once with 39 seconds left and another time with 29 seconds left, but the free-throw game did not go in favor of the Lady Bulldogs as the team was not able to find the points to pull closer before the final buzzer.

Carpenter led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds. Brown added 14 points and White had 12 points.

The Lady Bulldogs (4-5, 3-4 AAC) get a week off before playing their next game, a conference matchup against the University of Pikeville on Saturday. Tip is set for 2:00 p.m.
