Third Quarter Dooms Women's Basketball Against Montreat

ATHENS, Tenn.- The women's basketball opened the month of December with a home Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game against the Montreat College Lady Cavaliers on Wednesday. The team fell in the game 85-71. 

Leslie Hames opened the game with a layup and three-pointer to give the Lady Bulldogs a 5-2 lead. Sloan Carpenter scored seven straight points propeling TWU to a 12-7 lead. After a Jordan White layup, Hames hit three consecutive three-point jumpers, giving the team 16 staight points and a 23-7 lead. A free throw by Julia Howard helped the team go into the second quarter leading 24-10. 

The second quarter opened with Montreat scoring six straight points to cut the lead down to 24-16. White ended the scoring drought with back-to-back layups, putting the team ahead by 12 points. Talley Lawson gave the team two different nine-point advantages with two baskets, her second making the score 32-23. Aubrey Long stopped a Montreat rally with a three-pointer and Lawson moved the lead back to double digits with a three-pointer, giving the team a 38-27 lead with 2:05 left in the half. A 7-2 run by the opponents cut the lead down to 40-34 at the halftime break. 

The opening seconds of the third quarter saw the teams exchange baskets, with the scores for Tennessee Wesleyan coming from Lawson and Howard. The Lady Bulldogs continued to hold the lead after baskets by Hames and White. The lead did not hold though as Montreat tied the game 51-51 with 5:35 left in the third quarter. The opponents broke the tie with 12-2 run over the remaining time, taking a 63-53 lead into the final quarter. 

Hames opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play, and scores from Carpenter adn Camryn Brown made the score 69-60 with 6:35 remaining. The team was able to carry the momentum though as they fell by the final score of 85-71. 

Hames led the team with 19 points. 

Tennessee Wesleyan (4-4, 3-3 AAC) goes on the road for a conference game against Brenau University on Saturday. The game is set for 2:00 p.m.
