Women's Basketball Wins Road Game at Columbia

Columbia, S.C.- The women's basketball team went on the road for two games in Columbia, S.C. The first game of the two Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) games came against the Columbia College Koalas on Friday

Five minutes into the game, the Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the game. A layup by Cambree Mayo, a three-pointer by Mikalee Martin, and Anna Crowder's jumper gave the team a 7-6 advantage with 5:20 remaining in the first quarter. Columbia took back over the lead before Mayo put the game into two ties, the latter being 11-11. Ella Crowder broke the tie but the opponents ended the quarter with a 16-13 lead.

TWU opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run, beginning with an Alexis Bates three-pointer, and ending with Martin's three-pointer with a Mayo free throw in between. Over the next several minutes, five ties and five lead changes occur. Yeika Jimenez Diaz forced the final lead change with a pair of free throws. The final tie occurred at halftime as Columbia hit a pair of free throws to put the game in a 30-30 tie at halftime.

Out of the halftime break, the opponents scored 13 of the first 18 points to lead 43-35 with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter, the score was tied. By scoring 16 of the next 24 points from the combo of Jordan Wright, A. Crowder, and Jimenez Diaz, the Lady Bulldogs tied the 51-51 to end the third quarter.

The momentum carried over to the fourth quarter for Tennessee Wesleyan. Martin and Wright combined to score the first five points of the quarter, and the team went on to outscore Columbia 11-4 over the first six minutes of the fourth quarter to lead 62-55. After a jumper by the opponents cut the Lady Bulldogs' lead down to five with 2:44 remaining, Columbia did not score for the remainder of the game. Wright and Jimenez Diaz scored eight more points to give the team a 70-57 win, their fifth straight win.

Wright scored 18 points (all in the second half) while Jimenez Diaz (17), Mayo (11), and Martin (10) joined in double digits. A. Crowder led on the boards with eight rebounds.

The win moved the team's record to 14-6 overall and 12-6 in the AAC.
