Softball Swept by Pikeville

PIKEVILLE, Ky.- The softball team was not able to find an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) win on Wednesday. The team fell to the University of Pikeville in both games of the doubleheader.

Game One:

In the first game of the doubleheader, the offense for the Lady Bulldogs was hidden as the team only had one hit. The hit came in the third inning by Brooklynn Deaver. Pikeville won the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 9-0.

Game Two:

The offense that was missing in the first game appeared in the second game for TWU.

After stolen bases, Macy Chastain and Tatum Massengale stood on in scoring position on third and second, respectively. Ashley Allen came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to score Chastain, giving the team a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The lead grew as the next batter, Brooke Freeman, hit a single that Massengale scored on.

With the score 2-1 after the Pikeville scored in the bottom of the first inning, Brantley Bruggink eventually became the third run for the team in the third inning. Bruggink opened the third inning with a single, advancing to third on Chastain's at-bat. A flyout by Massengale turned into a sacrifice fly when Bruggink scored, moving the team ahead 3-1. The opponents tied the score in the bottom of the third.

TWU used the same combo to take back the lead in the fifth inning, except this time Bruggink used a double to get on base, scoring on Massengale's second sacrifice fly, breaking a 3-3 tie. Unfortunately, Pikeville scored in the bottom of the fifth inning to force the final lead change of the game.

The losses moved the team's record to 6-16 overall and 6-11 in the AAC.
