Basuini Steps Down as Head Coach of Cross Country and Track and Field Programs

ATHENS, Tenn.- Head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach Michael Basuini announced he is stepping down from his position to pursue other professional opportunities outside of college athletics. Basuini has been a part of both programs for the past eight years. 

Basuini joined Tennessee Wesleyan in August of 2017 as an assistant coach for the cross country and track and field programs. In September of 2021, Basuini was named the interim coach of both programs for the 2021-22 season and had the interim title removed to begin the 2022-23 season.

In his time as head coach of the track and field programs, Basuini coached 41 individuals who qualified for the NAIA National Championships. Basuini saw one member of his team wins an individual national championship in the Women's Triple Jump in 2023. Basuini guided the women's outdoor track and field team to a second-place finish at the 2023 Appalachian Athletic Conference Championships. The cross country teams saw five members go to the NAIA Cross Country Championships during his time leading the programs.

"We are incredibly grateful for Michael's dedication and leadership throughout his tenure with our cross country and track and field programs," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Donny Mayfield. "Over the last eight years, Michael has been more than just a coach. He has been a mentor, a role model, and a driving force behind the success and growth of our student-athletes both on and off the field."

During his time as an assistant coach at TWU, Basuini helped send two men and five women cross country runners to the NAIA National Meet, coached a national championship men's 4x100m Relay team, and 35 All-Americans in track.

Basuini will work with Tennessee Wesleyan through the transition to a new coach.
