ATHENS, Tenn. — Despite controlling long stretches of play and generating several quality chances, Tennessee Wesleyan fell just short in a 1–0 loss to unbeaten Union Commonwealth on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6–7, 5–4 AAC) conceded an early goal in the fourth minute but battled back with an aggressive and organized effort the rest of the way. Keeper Astolfi Ange anchored the defense with several key stops, including a diving save in the 35th minute to keep the deficit at one.
After settling in, Tennessee Wesleyan began to dictate tempo midway through the first half. Charlie Wood and David Tayau each tested the Union back line with early attempts, while Julien Withrow forced a save from close range in the 40th minute. The Bulldogs kept the pressure on late in the half with a corner kick from Jake Fisher that nearly connected with Cameron Grooms, whose header went just wide.
In the second half, TWU's intensity rose as they pressed for an equalizer. The Bulldogs earned a series of set pieces, including multiple corners from Felipe dos Santos, and nearly broke through in the 78th minute when Grooms' header was turned away by the Union keeper.
