Cold Spell Dooms Men's Basketball Against Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.- The men's basketball team fell on the road on Thursday. The team fell to the Montreat College Cavaliers 97-87 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game. 

Stratton Lovvorn and Armando Cuardado scored the first two baskets of the game, giving the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead early on. By the midway point of the half, TWU had built their lead to 12-5 after a Lovvorn three-point basket. With 12:49 remaining in the first half, Montreat had taken the lead. The game remained close though with the teams exchanging the lead eight times over the remaining minutes of the first half. Montreat took the last lead change, holding a 39-36 lead at halftime.

Out of the break, the opponents started the second half on an 8-2 run. TWU fought their way back, cutting the deficit to one point on Ty Runyan's layup as the scoreboard read 49-48. The team was not able to take the lead though. Montreat moved their lead to 57-51 near the midway point of the second half. With 12:08 remaining, Reshaun Hampton hit a three-pointer to put the game in a 57-57 tie. A tie broke in their favor on Lovvorn's three-point play, moving the score to 66-65. Holding a 72-71 lead, the offense went cold for the Bulldogs. Montreat took advantage by scoring nine straight points to turn the lead in their favor. The team was not able to pull back up, falling in the game.

Hampton led the team with 18 points.

TWU (10-10, 9-7 AAC) will return to their home court on Wednesday when they face Truett McConnell University. The conference game is set for 7:30 p.m.
