No. 21 Baseball Brings Brooms Against Truett McConnell

CLEVELAND, Ga.- The 21st-ranked baseball team went back out on the field at Truett McConnell University on Saturday. The two teams played each other in a doubleheader to finish the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series.

Game One:

The second inning saw both teams score. Tennessee Wesleyan scored one run in the inning. Cayle Webster eventually became the run, getting on base with a single and moving to third on Evan Magill's double. Webster scored on Daniel Stewart's fielder's choice, giving the team a 1-0 lead. Truett McConnell scored two runs in the bottom of the second to lead 2-1. The opponent's lead was brief as the Bulldogs took over the lead in the third inning.

With Blake Hubble standing on third, Webster hit a double to center field that brought Hubble home and put Marco Martinez on third. Stewart made the score 5-2 with a three-run home run. Braxton Turner and Magill hit solo home runs in back-to-back innings to give TWU a 7-2 lead through five innings. The final two runs occurred in the sixth inning. Webster recorded a walk with the bases loaded while Magill hit a sacrifice fly a play later with Hubble and Martinez scoring the runs, making the final score 9-2.

Jake Sergent got the pitching win while Blake Peyton had eight strikeouts. Stewart led the offense with four RBIs.

Game Two:

In the second game, the Bulldogs did not score until the fourth inning. The sacrifice fly by Corbin Shaw that brought Dante Leach across home plate tied the score 1-1. The game was decided in the seventh inning of the seven-inning game.

The seventh inning saw Tennessee Wesleyan score five runs in the top half of the inning. Turner got on base with a single and moved to second on a Hubble walk. A wild pitch moved each runner forward a base and the bases became loaded on an intentional walk for Martinez. One of the runs came across on a hit by pitch on Jack Steven's at-bat as Turner came to home plate. Webster hit a sacrifice fly to score Hubble. Magill hit a ball to right field for a single that brought Martinez home and Stevens was the last run of the game, scoring on Shaw's single to make the final score read 6-1.

Daniel Davila, who got the pitching win, and Christian Delashmit both finished with two strikeouts in the game.

The schedule sees the Bulldogs (26-13, 17-7 AAC) return to Athens for a non-conference series against No. 3 Georgia Gwinnett College. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 3:00 p.m.
